18.09.2007   Solid 5th at Silverstone for Binnie Lola...

After an incident packed 1000kms race, Bill, Chris and Allen took a solid 5th place finish at Silverstone (Gt.Britain) yesterday.

Having qualified the Carlisle Capital, Kumho Tires, Vanco, Chic Shopping In Europe and Click Culture backed Lola-Zytek in a fine 4th in class and 12th overall, Chris was optimistic for a good result. "We found a good balance in the end, and I managed to eek out a pretty quick time despite traffic. Kumho provided us with another new tire which I think will be ok for the race" the London based driver commented.

On raceday the teams were greeted with fine sunshine and a good crowd. Certainly the weather was a vast improvement over the last appearance by the LMS teams here at Silverstone when it rained in torrents for the entire 6 hour race. Chris made a good start and immediately set about keeping the 2 LMP1 Pescarolo's behind him, and in turn, fighting to move up the overall running order, but early into his stint drama occurred "I was coming around Woodcote and I lost all power. I was faced with a split decision to continue or dive for the pit lane. I did the latter but stopped on the grass and gravel. I managed to re-start and continue, but this gremlin cost us a vital lap". The problem never reared up again.

Thanks to the problem Chris had a lot of fighting to do to try and regain position-something he set about with valor. He eventually handed the car over to Allen after just over an hour had elapsed. Allen took over in 8th place and by the end of his solid double stint he handed over to Bill for the final hours in 5th spot. Bill unmistakably drove with his trademark quick pace and care, maintaining position until the checkered flag fell. In the end, a good result after the early race dramas.

After the race Allen commented “We were pretty pleased with our pace, although in the final 15 laps of all our stints the rear tires were starting to go off. The track was very dirty offline and that made it tough in traffic and didn’t help the tire situation as we were constantly picking up bits of gravel. It was also an incredibly physical race, perhaps the toughest I’ve done this season. I can’t exactly pinpoint why that was, but I guess it could be down to the high level of G-forces drivers experience at Silverstone in these cars. Overall I think this was a pretty reasonable showing and a very enjoyable weekend.”

Binnie Motorsports Sporting Director Gilbert Casse added: “The car was difficult to drive due to the bodywork damage we suffered when Chris had his unfortunate problem early in the race. Despite those circumstances, Allen still did a good job and his times were constantly improving during his second stint.”

19.08.2007   5th Place at Spa in drama filled race...
Yesterday (Sunday) at the famous Spa Francorchamps circuit, Binnie Motorsport emerged with a 5th place finish after what was to become a drama and incident packed 1000km race. Starting a sunny conditions Chris Buncombe drove an almost flawless stint to put the Lola B05/40-Zytek into a podium contending position. By the time he handed over to Allen Timpany the car was in a solid 3rd in class. "I want to thank my team for preparing a great car once again for us. It was great fun dicing with the Quifel and RML Lola's. I think we really showed our pace and competitiveness with the established P2 class runners this weekend, although we still need to improve with qualifying to be honest. But I enjoyed the stint, and kept the car in good condition for Allen and Bill to take over".

Timpany seemed to spend an in-ordinate amount of time behind the wheel of the Lola, thanks to 2 long safety Car periods during which there was one very heavy accident for Raymond Narac in the IMSA-Matmut Porsche 997 (thankfully Narac was unhurt) and an unscheduled pit stop thanks to a faulty wire on the car's alternator. This lost the team positions but Allen nonetheless drove a stirling stint to keep the team in contention. The final stint saw Bill battling to hold off the Saulnier Courage of Bruce Jouannay, but the two cars touched within 5 laps of the finish, causing Jouannay to spin and Bill to make a pit stop for repair work. The second unscheduled stop cost us P4, so really things could have been a whole lot better. Our class rivals RML showed the competitiveness of the LMP2 class these days, taking a fine 3rd place overall and class victory, followed by the Quifel Lola-AER in 5th overall. Outright race winners once again was Team Peugeot-Total Sport with the 905 Diesel car.

19.07.2007   Team Update - Portsmouth NH

After the euphoria surrounding the team's Le Mans win and subsequent 6th place points finish at the Nurburgring 1000kms 2 weeks later, we're now in mid-July and things have been quiet regarding on-track activity but behind the scenes in the UK race shop, the team are working hard preparing for the next race-Spa 1000kms in August. The entire car is stripped down and rebuilt between each race, and an amazing attention to detail is taken to ensure maximum reliability at the next race.

01.07.2007   P6 in Nurburgring Qualifying...

Below overcast Eiffel Mountain skies Chris Buncombe qualified the Binnie Motorsport Lola-Zytek in a comfortable 6th place for tomorrow's Nurburgring 1000kms race. It was Buncombe's first visit to the famous German circuit but despite a reasonable time he has mixed feelings after the quali session. "I think I could have done better, to be honest. But we have been struggling with under steer all weekend, and trying to dial that out of the car's setup before the qualifying session, but we ran out of time. That said I made a couple of small mistakes on my hot lap, resulting an an 'ok' grid position.

The British West Countryman continued "We will have a good car for the race though, and that's the important thing. Bill will start and I have every confidence in him, of course. Turn 1 here is a very tight hairpin after a fast straight, and I think if we can avoid any contact with others there, we will be fine. I am looking forward to driving here, it's a great circuit and I think in any weather conditions we can be there at the end, which is when it really matters".

Ovrall P2 fastest was the RML Lola-MG of Tommy Erdos, followed by the Barazi Zytek of Mike Vergers. Taking outright race 'pole positon' was the Peugeot LMP1 driven by ex-Williams F1 star Marc Gene.

Tomorrow's race kicks off at 12pm CET, 11am UK time, and you can follow the entire race either with the European Motors TV coverage, or via www.lmes.net.

Well done to all the Binnie Boys - a well deserved victory for all concerned. Congratulations are coming in from all over the globe, from friends and sponsors. A big thanks to Kumho for providing us with great tyres and congrats to them - this is their best ever finish at Le Mans and we are pleased to bring that to them, and indeed all our sponsors - Carlisle Capital, Vanco, Chic Outlet Shopping (the first race for them, and a Le Mans win!), Click Culture, Red Hook, all our fans and everyone else who followed us. Thanks!

To wrap it up, because we sat out most of the final hour in the pit garage to be safe, and also because we had no radio contact with Chris, we ended up finishing 18th overall. we completed 317 laps and made 28 pit stops.

The race was won outright by Audi #1 - Pirro/Werner and Biela. GT1 spoils went to the #009 Aston Martin, and GT2 honours went to #15 Porsche IMSA Performance team. Well done to them too.

We'll add some pictures and driver reactions soon!
